Covet offers a unique service that many users may find interesting. The site is dedicated entirely to fashion, but not just any fashion. The user takes center stage by providing information on their personal style. Covet uses its Stylyzer to learn the user’s fashion preferences. The Stylyzer takes that information and scours the web for brand name merchandise that is on sale. The user receives emails that direct them to the sales that offer items they are most likely to want. Through Covet, fashion conscious users can find great deals on garments and accessories that they will fall in love with.
Covet was founded in June of 2009. It was intended to give users a better way to shop “without sin.” The creators came up with a unique approach to finding good deals and getting items that the user will actually want to wear. The site is still growing. Today, it focuses on women’s fashion but notes that men’s and children’s versions are on the way. In the meantime, Covet continues gathering popularity as more shoppers find its fun, unique approach to saving money and shopping for clothes. Like.com, the owner of Covet.com, was aquired by Google in August 2010. Covet.com was shut down in September 2011. Features are integrated into Google Product Search.
The system behind Covet is very unique compared to other shopping websites. It is safe to say the site isn’t just geared towards buying, but also towards fashion in general. Using sophisticated search capabilities, Covet can actually determine which items a user will like. It then searches for sales and discounts so the user is given a custom made list of deals that cover items they may love, or at least like.
The Covet website is reminiscent of popular fashion publications. Users are greeted by a dark purple background and sleek Covet logo in metallic silver. The homepage includes examples of fashion worn by models as well as collections of wearable items. Navigational links help users get around. Even though the site includes many color images and attractive graphics, it refrains from looking too busy.
A new visitor can click the white “Signup” link at the top right hand corner of the Covet homepage or the large, white “Start now. It’s free” button at the bottom right hand corner. The registration process begins by asking the user for their style preference. This is done by showing a pair of celebrity and model images and asking the user to choose which is more their style. As the user works through the images, a purple progress bar continues to fill until Covet understands something about the user’s style preferences. Next, the user is asked to select their sizes before being taken to the actual registration form. Users can choose to sign up through Facebook or by entering a name, email address, password, gender, date of birth, and location information.
Covet provides users with a fun, unique service but it is not really something that would warrant a subscription fee. Anyone can create an account and receive email offers through Covet for free. There is no payment required for doing so. The only cost associated with the service includes any purchases made by the user.
Fashion conscious women can really fall in love with Covet. The application offers a unique, fun way to shop for clothing and save money. Eventually Covet will expand to include men’s and children’s garments, but for now the site is geared entirely towards a female demographic.
